Biba pushes for fast-track changes to electronic motor certificates 14/02/08
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has welcomed the Department for Transport's (DfT) announcement that motor insurance certificates will now be permitted to be delivered electronically as it is a win-win situation for customers and the insurance industry.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, said: "The Biba Motor Panel has been campaigning for the electronic delivery of motor insurance certificates for more than two years and we are delighted that DfT has accepted our suggestions. We hope that their introduction isn't delayed in any way and we are urging the Government to fast track the new regulations.

"There is no reason why this shouldn't happen quickly. Delivery will be faster and easier for clients and benefit the environment. Immediate point of sale documentation will be an advantage especially if someone is buying a new car they can provide evidence proof of insurance immediately without having to wait for a document to arrive in the post."

Benefits of electronic distribution of motor insurance certificates:
  • Massive cost savings for postage (manpower, stamps and envelopes).
  • Motor Insurance Database time benefits from a more automated system.
  • Better adherence to contract certainty requirements as documents will be with clients sooner.
  • Improved customer service.
  • Avoidance of repeat calls from customers chasing documents.
  • Wider environmental benefits by less use of paper and lower delivery emissions.
  • Better take up of EVL - Electronic Vehicle Licensing is anticipated.
